The types of mediumship are natural expressions of human sensitivity that serve as bridges between the visible and the invisible. More than extraordinary phenomena, they reveal paths of self-knowledge and spiritual expansion.
Throughout my journey, I’ve realized that when mediumship is properly educated, it brings clarity and balance to everyday life. Recognizing signs, practicing responsibly, and cultivating discernment are steps that make conscious development a safe and transformative path.
What is mediumship, after all?
The word mediumship comes from the Latin medium, meaning “means” or “intermediary.” In essence, a medium is someone capable of establishing a bridge between the physical and spiritual worlds, translating into perceptions what goes beyond ordinary senses.
This sensitivity is not a privilege for a few but a capacity present in all human beings, to varying degrees.
In daily life, mediumship can manifest in simple ways, such as strong intuition or revealing dreams, or in more intense experiences, like psychography or clairvoyance.
It’s important to remember that it doesn’t depend on religion, though traditions such as Spiritism, Umbanda, and Candomblé have contributed greatly to organizing and valuing this knowledge.
Educating mediumship means learning to distinguish genuine perceptions from internal emotions, maintaining both energetic and emotional balance. When practiced responsibly, it becomes a tool for personal evolution and service to others.
The main types of mediumship
Throughout history, many spiritual traditions have classified and studied different forms of psychic (or mediumistic) gifts. This organization helps us understand how each person perceives and transmits messages coming from the spiritual plane.
When we talk about types of mediumship, we are not referring to hierarchy or superiority among them, but rather to distinct manifestations of the same sensitivity. Understanding these differences also helps clarify the distinction between mediumship and intuition, since although they may seem similar, each experience has its own origin and purpose.
Some mediums capture thoughts and ideas intuitively, while others experience more intense manifestations, such as incorporation or psychography. There are also those who perceive images, voices, or physical sensations without any logical explanation.
It’s important to remember that each type of mediumship carries its own characteristics, challenges, and responsibilities. Below, I present the main ones so you can identify which resonates most with your personal experience or spiritual awakening.

Inspiration and telepathy
Among the types of mediumship, inspiration and telepathy are among the most subtle, and also the most common.
In this form of manifestation, the medium receives ideas, words, or thoughts that do not originate from their conscious mind. They arise as clear intuitions, sudden insights, or even complete sentences that seem to “descend” from somewhere.
In telepathy, communication can occur between two incarnate people or between the spiritual plane and the medium.
In inspiration, the influence is more diffuse: it may come as a melody that appears out of nowhere, a wise piece of advice that arises spontaneously, or an unexpected creative solution.
An important point to understand is that the spirit transmits the idea, but the language used belongs to the medium. This means that grammar errors or personal style may appear without invalidating the authenticity of the message.
To cultivate this type of mediumship, it’s essential to keep the mind open, balanced, and free from excessive emotional interference. Quieting thoughts through meditation and prayer greatly helps in clearly perceiving what truly comes from beyond.
Physical effects
This is one of the most striking types of mediumship, as it involves visible and tangible manifestations in the material plane.
We’re talking about phenomena such as the movement of objects, noises, temperature changes, or even lights appearing in spaces during spiritual practices.
Mediums of physical effects may act in three ways:
- Conscious, when they are fully aware of what is happening;
- Semi-conscious, when they perceive part of the process;
- Unconscious, when the phenomenon occurs without their awareness.
Although it can arouse curiosity and even fascination, this type of mediumship requires great responsibility. Serious, energetically prepared environments and experienced supervision are essential to ensure that the experience remains safe and constructive.
Incorporation
Incorporation is perhaps one of the best-known manifestations when we talk about types of mediumship. In this case, the spirit manifests through the medium’s body, influencing speech, gestures, and even vital energy.
There are three main levels:
- Conscious, when the medium perceives everything that happens;
- Semi-conscious, when they have partial recollection;
- Unconscious, rarer, when they remember nothing afterward.
There is also what’s called transitory incorporation, when the medium channels not only their spiritual guides but also other entities needing to convey messages. It’s important to emphasize that for incorporation to occur harmoniously, the medium must take care of their physical, mental, and emotional health.
Training, study, and proper guidance are indispensable. Incorporation is not a game or a stage performance, it’s a spiritual commitment that must always serve the greater good, understanding, and charity.
Psychography and pictography
Psychography is one of the most well-known types of mediumship, popularized by great mediums who dedicated their lives to transmitting written messages from the spiritual plane.
In this process, communication occurs through writing and may happen in four forms:
- Mechanical, when the medium is unaware of what is written and their hand is guided by the spirit;
- Semi-mechanical, when there’s partial medium influence;
- Intuitive, when the idea is received and developed in the medium’s own words;
- Auditory, when the medium consciously hears the message and writes it down.
Pictography follows the same principle but conveys images instead of words, therefore, the auditory form doesn’t apply here.
Paintings, drawings, or sculptures may emerge as channels of spiritual expression. Many artists, consciously or not, carry this sensitivity.
The most important thing is to always observe the content and purpose of the message, remembering that both psychography and pictography should be practiced with seriousness and the intention to serve.

Psychophony
Psychophony occurs when a spirit uses the medium’s vocal apparatus to communicate, producing sounds, words, or speeches. Unlike inspiration, where the idea comes as thought, here the voice is literally projected through the medium.
This phenomenon can produce notable changes in tone, rhythm, or even gender of the voice — men may express female voices and vice versa.
It’s not uncommon for a medium to feel vocal fatigue after intense sessions, reinforcing the need for physical and energetic preparation.
Clairvoyance and Clairsight (clear-seeing)
Among the types of mediumship, clairvoyance and clairsight attract much curiosity.
Clairvoyance occurs when the medium can see images, scenes, or spirits, generally mentally, like a “movie” projected in their consciousness. Clairsight or clear-seeing expands this gift, allowing perception across different times and spaces, even other dimensions.
It’s important to note that, in most cases, the medium doesn’t see with physical eyes, but with the soul. This can happen with open or closed eyes, awake or in deep relaxation.
These perceptions, when well-trained, can offer valuable insights but should be recorded with discernment to avoid hasty interpretations.
Audience and clairaudience
In spiritual audience, the medium hears voices or sounds without a physical source.
This perception may appear in two ways: as an inner voice, similar to a clear thought, or as an external one, seeming to come from someone in the room.
Clairaudience, on the other hand, is more refined.
Beyond hearing, the medium can discern nuances in the message, identify the communicator’s energy, and even distinguish whether it comes from spiritual guides or other presences.

Healing
Spiritual guides and mentors can, in some situations, facilitate healing processes through incorporation, guiding the medium’s gestures and words.
In other cases, the practice happens more directly: the healing energy flows through the hands, gaze, or subtle movements, without needing any material tools.
This gift can also be expanded through complementary methods such as Reiki, Pranic Healing, Magnified Healing, Theta Healing, or simple techniques involving herbs, aromatherapy, and chakra harmonization.
In every form, the essence remains the same: to promote balance, relief, and well-being.
Demand (Spiritual cleansing mediumship)
Some mediums possess the ability to identify and dissolve negative energetic fields that accumulate around individuals or families.
These forces can arise from dense thoughts, emotions, and intentions emitted by others, taking various forms and affecting the spiritual, and even everyday, well-being of those involved.
This type of mediumship, often found in spiritual leaders, allows them to neutralize works of negative magic, conduct deep cleansings, and assist others in awakening their own mediumistic gifts.
More than protection, it’s about restoring harmony and opening the way for new possibilities.
The importance of developing mediumship
Developing mediumship means learning how to use spiritual gifts with balance, ethics, and awareness. This care transforms perception into practical wisdom, strengthens self-knowledge, and enhances one’s ability to serve others.
When conducted responsibly, mediumistic development ceases to be mere sensitivity and becomes a genuine path of spiritual and human evolution.
